Crawley Unaware of Captain Stokes' Provocative 'Frail Characters' Remarks

England opener Crawley has indicated he was not familiar with statements made by captain Stokes about the dressing room as no place for "those lacking fortitude".

Stokes made this message in multiple conversations in the wake of England's defeat in the second Ashes versus Australia earlier this month.

Ahead of the third Test, where England now face a series loss at the earliest opportunity, the captain stated he had let his sentiment to "drift around" among the playing group.

"I've done all the talking over the past two days that I required," said the England leader.

But, following Crawley scored 85 on the fourth day in Adelaide, he stated: "I missed those remarks."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. We take anything stated in the press with a pinch of salt," Crawley continued.

Frank Discussions and Steady Philosophy

Stokes made the "weak men" comment after his side suffered a loss in the second Test to fall 2-0 down.

The England squad subsequently took a holiday to a Queensland resort in the gap between the second and third matches.

Prior to the Adelaide contest, he revealed his players had held "raw" conversations and he had urged them to "display some fight" in their battle to stay in contention in the series.

Nevertheless, the Kent batsman stated the messaging from the captain and coach McCullum had remained consistent with their prior three years in leadership.

"It's been extremely upbeat, unchanged," said the opener. "The focus is just trying to be optimistic, play our way, with great liberty. It felt like we could do an extraordinary feat entering this Test."

Australia Close of Rapid Series Victory

The opener's wicket late on Saturday was part of a decisive triple-strike by Australia spinner Lyon.

The spinner's triple strike in a short spell – including the wickets of Harry Brook and Stokes himself – meant the chasing side 207-6 in pursuit of a daunting total of 435 runs.

Consequently, the home team need just four more wickets on the final day to secure an insurmountable 3-0 advantage after three Tests.

A loss will extend England's drought in this country to 18 Tests and condemn them to a fourth straight overseas Ashes series loss.

The current battle is set to be decided in just eleven days of cricket – with England losing the initial matches in two and four days each.

The last time 1921, when the Australians sealed a series win in England in eight days, has the destination of the urn been decided so quickly. The hosts have also triumphed in 11 days on two other occasions in the modern era.

"It's disappointing," admitted Crawley. "Our goal was to regain the Ashes and we're facing elimination at this point."

"There will still be plenty to play for and we'll definitely view it like that," Crawley added.

"It's been tough. Australia is a very, very good team. It was always going to be tough touring here to face them. They were the front-runners coming in to it have demonstrated their quality."

Ollie Pope's Place In Question

Although Crawley's performance in Adelaide likely secures questions about his short-term place in the England team, Pope looks under threat for his position in the fourth Test on Boxing Day.

Pope fell for 17 runs in the team's second innings on Saturday, extending his modest returns against the old enemy.

In 16 Ashes innings, the Surrey man has failed to score a fifty and averages just 17.62.

A solitary other English batsman in over a century – Dennis Amiss – has played as many times in the top six in the Ashes and returned a poorer average.

However, the opener insisted any suggestion Pope is under the microscope comes from "the media" – meaning the press – "and not within the team."

"The squad is fully aware how good of a player he is," said Crawley. "Ollie has enjoyed a productive year if I'm honest."

"He has played some really good knocks. This is noise externally. There is no chat of that nature on Ollie in the camp," he finished.
