England's Assistant Coach Explains His Philosophy: The England Jersey Should Feel Like a Cape, Not Body Armour.
In the past, Anthony Barry featured at a lower division club. Today, he is focused on helping Thomas Tuchel win the World Cup in 2026. The road from player to coach commenced with a voluntary role with the youth team. He recalls, “Evening sessions, a partial pitch, organizing 11-a-side … deflated balls, scarce bibs,” and he was hooked. He realized his destiny.
Staggering Ascent
His advancement stands out. Starting in a senior role at Wigan, he built a name through unique exercises and excellent people skills. His roles at clubs led him to Chelsea and Bayern Munich, while also serving in roles with national teams for Ireland, Belgium, and Portugal. He has worked with legends including top footballers. Now, with England, it's all-consuming, the “pinnacle” according to him.
“Dreams are the starting point … But I’m a believer that passion overcomes challenges. You envision the goal and then you plan: ‘What's the process, each day, each phase?’ Our goal is the World Cup. Yet dreams alone aren't enough. It's essential to develop a methodical process enabling us to maximize our opportunities.”
Focus on Minutiae
Obsession, especially with the smallest details, defines Barry’s story. Working every hour under the sun—sometimes the moon, too, the coaching duo test boundaries. The approach include mental assessments, a plan for hot conditions for the finals abroad, and creating a unified squad. He stresses “Team England” and avoids language such as "break".
“It's not time off or a rest,” he explains. “We had to build something where players are eager to join and, secondly, they feel so stretched that going back is a relief.”
Ambitious Trainers
He characterizes himself and the head coach as highly ambitious. “We aim to control each element of play,” he states. “We want to conquer the whole ground and that's our focus many of our days on. It’s our job to not only anticipate of changes but to surpass them and create our own ones. It's an ongoing effort focused on finding solutions. And it’s to make the complex clear.
“We have 50 days together with the team before the World Cup finals. We have to play a sophisticated style that offers a strategic upper hand and explain it thoroughly in that period. It’s to take it from idea to information to know-how to performance.
“To create a system for effective use during the limited time, we have to use the entire 500 days we'll have from when we started. When the squad is away, we have to build relationships among them. We have to spend time communicating regularly, we need to watch them play, feel them, touch them. If we just use the 50 days, it's impossible.”
Upcoming Matches
Barry is preparing for the final pair for the World Cup preliminaries – facing Serbia at home and in Albania. England have guaranteed their place at the finals with six wins out of six without conceding a goal. But there will be no easing off; instead. This period to reinforce the team’s identity, to gain more impetus.
“Thomas and I are both pretty clear that the football philosophy should represent the best aspects of English football,” Barry explains. “The physicality, the flexibility, the robustness, the work ethic. The national team shirt should be harder than ever to get but comfortable to have on. It ought to be like a superhero's cape and not body armour.
“To ensure it's effortless, we have to give them a system that lets them to operate like they do every week, that connects with them and lets them release restrictions. They need to reduce hesitation and more in doing.
“There are morale boosts available to trainers in the first and final thirds – starting moves deep, pressing from the front. However, in midfield on the field, that section, we believe play has stagnated, particularly in the Premier League. Everybody has so much information these days. They know how to set up – structured defenses. We are really trying to focus on accelerating the game through midfield.”
Drive for Growth
His desire for improvement is relentless. During his education for the Uefa pro licence, he felt anxious regarding the final talk, as his cohort featured big names like Lampard and Carrick. To enhance his abilities, he sought out difficult settings available to him to hone his presentations. One was HMP Walton locally, and he trained detainees for a training session.
He completed the course with top honors, with his thesis – focusing on set-pieces, for which he analysed thousands of throw-ins – was published. Lampard included convinced and he recruited the coach to his team with the Blues. After Lampard's dismissal, it said plenty that the club got rid of most of his staff except Barry.
His replacement with the club was Tuchel, and shortly after, they claimed the Champions League. After Tuchel's exit, the coach continued with Potter. Once Tuchel resurfaced in Germany, he recruited Barry of Chelsea to rejoin him. The Football Association consider them a duo similar to Southgate and Holland.
