Israelis have gathered around the country to remember two years since the Hamas-initiated offensive on that fateful day in October 2023, as negotiations continued in the neighboring country over a conclusion to the conflict in Gaza.

The incident led to more than 1,200 people losing their lives and 251 others captured away to Gaza as prisoners. It was the single most fatal day for the Jewish community since the Second World War.

Israel responded by initiating a military offensive in Gaza which has claimed in excess of 67,000 people, as reported by the region's Hamas-run health ministry. Its numbers are regarded as reliable by the United Nations and other world agencies.

"Our aggressive adversaries have hit us hard, but they have not overcome us," the prime minister added on Tuesday.

He also promised to "accomplish all the objectives of the war: the homecoming of all the abducted, the removal of the Hamas government and the assurance that Gaza will never again present a threat to Israel".

Remembrance Gatherings Across Israel

The government authorities postponed formal commemorations until October 16th - after the end of the Jewish High Holiday season - but gatherings still were held across the country on Tuesday.

A memorial ceremony for the relatives of people who died in the Hamas attack was organized in the coastal city. Put together by the victims' relatives, it was aired throughout Israeli broadcast stations.

Some time earlier, a minute's silence was held across the country.

Negotiation Meetings in Egypt

Simultaneously, both sides' delegations met in the North African Red Sea resort of Sharm el-Sheikh for a continuing round of mediated discussions to examine the conditions of the plan.

A high-ranking delegate familiar with the discussions indicated that an night meeting of indirect talks commenced at 7 PM local time.

The source explained the morning session ended without significant progress, due to disagreements over the recommended Israeli retreat arrangements from Gaza and over assurances Hamas demands to guarantee Israel does not recommence fighting after the initial stage of the agreement.

He noted that the discussions are "challenging and have still not achieve any major advancement," but pointed out that mediators are striving to close the gaps between the both parties.

Essential Matters in Negotiations

  • An enduring halt to fighting
  • The exchange of the prisoners still detained by Hamas for Palestinian prisoners from Gaza
  • The removal of Israeli forces from Gaza
  • Arrangements for assistance distribution
  • Future management of the area

Citizen Reaction

In Tel Aviv's Hostages Square previously, young Hagar - whose family member endured the assault on the outdoor event, where 378 people were murdered and dozens more were captured by Hamas militants - shared: "Nowhere seems like home any longer and until each abducted person return not a single person will be secure."

"Once we see everybody home again, we can feel relief once more. Then we can start to recover," she added.

In front of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's home in the capital, people congregated to show their solidarity for the loved ones of the abducted. Israel says forty-eight stay in captivity in Gaza, 20 of whom are believed to be alive.

Protester Atalia Regev explained: "It's necessary do every compromise necessary for the captives to return. But we truly desire assurances that we will be safe."

Research now regularly indicate that about seventy percent of Israelis prefer the hostilities to end in return for the release of the abducted.

Palestinian Conditions

At the area of the music event, mourners gathered to remember the victims.

From the site, the sound of Israeli air strikes and artillery could be heard just a brief space away in Gaza, where witnesses reported the heavy Israeli attacks carried on.

In the urban center, bombardments were reported in the dawn of Tuesday in the west side neighborhood, area and zone areas and in the east side neighbourhood of the community, as well the camp to the northwestern area.

"When the evening arrives, the anxiety appears with it," evacuated Gaza City resident a local woman, whose young son was killed by an Israeli aerial attack last year, described.

"My family are terrified of the attacks. All the night we are resting together, holding each other, notably my youngest child who places his head on me all night."

"Every second we monitor the updates to see developments. And I'm worried that this halt will not be finalized and that the conflict will come back to us."

Medical Crisis

Al-Shifa hospital in the urban area said it had received the remains of half dozen people by the daytime, including a trio who lost their lives in an Israeli bombing in the southern area.

Another medical facility in the southern urban center of the city reported two more dead people had been transported. An individual was died by Israeli troops while seeking aid to the southern area, medics reported.
