The acclaimed crime series Line of Duty is officially returning for its seventh season, confirmed by the broadcaster.

A brand new six-part series created by the show's creator will begin filming in Northern Ireland this spring, as confirmed by the production team.

Vicky McClure shared her enthusiasm about the comeback, stating she was "so excited" about the series' return. Adrian Dunbar added, "What a joy it is to know that the Three Amigos will be back filming together next year."

The last season wrapped up in 2021 with a final episode that drew in more than 17 million audience members. Rumors about a potential return have been circulating ever since, but confirmation only came this week.

New Challenges for The Team

Series seven begins with the anti-corruption unit no longer existing and rebranded as the new police oversight body, as revealed by production details.

Steve Arnott, Kate Fleming, and Ted Hastings continue tasked to combat corruption within the police force.

Their work "has never been more difficult", and under these circumstances, the trio will take on their "most delicate case so far."

Fresh Face and Complex Case

A new character, Det Insp Dominic Gough, described as a charismatic officer known for busts of criminal networks, faces allegations of abusing his position to become a sexual predator.

However, this investigation could be a intentional diversion from a larger danger still active in the shadows, the teaser suggested.

Speaking about the renewal, the creator said: "Everyone involved feels enormous gratitude to the dedicated viewers."

"We're privileged to have had countless fans track the developments of the unit over multiple series and we are thrilled to be coming back for a seventh installment."

Mercurio continued: "Corruption in this country was thought to be over while the series was not airing, so I've been compelled to use my creativity."

Actor Responses

The Scottish actor described appearing in the police drama as "a job of a lifetime".

"Beyond the show's success but the colleagues I've worked with I now call some of my closest friends."

"I can't wait to pull the waistcoat on again and get the team back together," he said.

The Nottingham-born actress stated: "It goes without saying I'm very happy Line of Duty is back! Eager to work with the creator, Martin and Dunbar again. The city, we'll see you soon!"

Adrian Dunbar noted: "While anticipating the unit days of Christmas, what a joy it is to know that the Three Amigos will be working together soon."

"Pleased with the announcement and anticipating those unexpected twists and turns."

Series Legacy

Line of Duty launched in 2012 and evolved into a highly successful television series of the last decade, featuring guest stars such as Stephen Graham.

Broadcasters haven't revealed when the upcoming series will premiere.

The finale of season six brought the extended plot about the hunt for kingpin known as "the mysterious H" to a close, and producers indicated at the moment there were no intentions for additional seasons.

However, the corporation confirmed on Tuesday that a new season is now being produced.
