Fresh analysis suggests that individuals who stop using blockbuster slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover reduced body mass much more quickly than those who end conventional lifestyle programs.
Research printed in a major medical journal demonstrates that while overweight people can lose a large proportion of their total mass while on the medication, the weight returns at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.
"People purchasing these treatments should be cognizant of the danger of fast weight regain when the therapy is stopped," cautioned expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of recovery suggests a reversion to starting weight within about 18 months.
Weighing Treatments
The study, which reviewed 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the effects of these new drugs with other pills.
Researchers point out that people who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone generally experience a less rapid weight regain—approximately 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.
The Reason for the Quick Regain
Experts believe the mode of action of the drugs explains the amplified rebound.
These medications mimic a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which controls appetite.
"Artificially providing GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production could lead to the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and may also reduce responsiveness to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.
"Discontinuation of this medication results in hunger is no longer kept in check, making excessive eating much more probable."
An Ongoing Condition?
Medical guidelines recommend the jabs for people with obesity-related health risks, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.
Professionals say that, considering the likelihood of weight regain, the therapy might need to be long-term.
This perspective is echoed by drug manufacturers, who note that the findings "underscore the long-term character of excess weight," comparing it to managing conditions like diabetes.
User Accounts
People who have discontinued the medication describe a powerful return of hunger.
"I experienced a switch activating and you become ravenous," said one woman.
This difficulty is exacerbated if individuals have not adopted lasting lifestyle or habit changes during therapy.
Widespread Interest
Recent estimates show that millions of people in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the past year, with interest being substantial.
- Adoption is greater among women than men.
- The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest level of interest.
- Many access the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.
Finally, experts caution that while these medications are effective tools for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent cure and lasting health benefits likely depends on integrated lifestyle support.
