The player's counter-punching play style and frequent emotional displays on court had prompted commentators to wonder if his ability to compete at the highest level was over.

Yet the athlete has altered his approach in the last few weeks, striving to approach the net and perform assertively, supported by an better serve.

Medvedev came back from a disadvantage in the first set against the tricky Frenchman, winning 4 of the final five games to take the lead.

Both players traded break points in the second set before the challenger, attempting for his first tour victory, gained dominance to force a third set.

He saved four initial opportunities in a tight deciding set before the Russian won the break to 15 to serve for the match.

Suitably, he clinched victory with a point at the net, with his opponent unable to control a volley after two hours and 38 minutes.
