It would be a massive understatement to say that KPop Demon Hunters has captivated global audiences. Audiences cite various reasons for its immense success, including its infectious songs, a vibrant fan community that produces its original dance routines and song versions, and a staggering volume of fanfiction.
From a female perspective, one of the most beloved aspects of KPop Demon Hunters is the relationship between Huntr/x's members Rumi, Mira, and Zoey. Against all challenges, they band together to vanquish evil and restore the Honmoon. While there is an complicated love story between Rumi and Saja Boys' Jinu, it never overshadows the endearing connection among the three girls. They are loud, unapologetic and fearless to appear silly.
Deliberate Goofiness of Huntr/x
According to the director and writer, the humorous nature of Huntr/x was intentional. Speaking at a media event alongside the vocalists and fellow director/writer Chris Appelhans, Kang was asked about the essential components she wanted women of all generations to see in the series.
"The most important is I wanted to see genuinely goofy female characters," Kang explained. "You know, we're so afraid, particularly in animated works, to show female characters be really silly and be the silliest one in the room."
She recalled her experiences from previous projects where a troupe of five [or] six main characters included one girl character. Creators faced difficulties in extended discussions about defining her distinctiveness. Kang proposed making the funniest character female, but the idea was often dismissed.
Strength Through Comedy
Kang admitted that this disappointment over the unwillingness to showcase goofy female characters directly shaped the creation of KPop Demon Hunters. She was set to make all three Huntr/x members silly.
"I firmly believe there's power and resilience in comedy," Kang said. "It takes a ton of courage. To propose gags. To be silly in front of somebody. And when you discover friends that accept your quirks, and join in your oddness, that is the best type of friendship. I really wanted to showcase that type of female relationship."
This approach paid off: The series is packed with wacky moments, often conveyed through the animation style. Examples include the three girls chugging ramen with big, bulging eyes and falling over each other when they see the attractive Saja Boys. These comedic elements make the characters unforgettable and are undoubtedly a major factor why fans are heavily invested and hoping for a sequel.
