UN:Me: A Cerebral Thriller That Blends Survival Horror with Social Deduction Gameplay

The recent Day of the Devs online presentation unveiled several fascinating upcoming titles, but one in particular has captured the imagination: UN:Me. Created by Historia and Shueisha Games, this single-player experience seems to blend the dread-filled setting of a Silent Hill title with the paranoid deduction heart of Among Us.

"This is a distinctive experience where a girl harboring several human souls inside her must escape from a labyrinth of the mind," states producer Yasukazu Kawai.

Entering a Fractured Mind

In UN:Me, players take control of an unnamed female protagonist seeming to be of teenage years. Within her exist four distinct personas, each with unique fears and drives. These souls can seize control spontaneously, releasing their innermost phobias upon her without warning.

Judging by showcased gameplay, much of the narrative unfolds within a eerie medical facility, though other scenes show the main character navigating a desolate chapel.

A World of Personal Horror

"What are you fearful of? What causes you uneasy?" asks game director Shun Sasaki. "High places. Small rooms. Authority figures. Elements that appear minor to others can activate something primal within us. This game delves into that concept — fears that are specific to each person."

The central gameplay loop revolves around controlling the persona that emerges at a particular moment. However, these souls will switch involuntarily as you play. While exploring, each soul's anxieties become amplified and attack the girl in succession. When the soul changes, so does the particular terror the player experiences.

Unsettling Visuals and a Deadly Decision

At first glance, UN:Me displays noticeable aesthetic parallels with the Silent Hill franchise. The hospital is filled with nurses all sporting the identical visage, with unnervingly wide grins. Patients in the lobby have large blooms where their necks are. Flowers are a recurring theme, contrasting natural beauty with unnatural horror.

Yet, UN:Me introduces a singular twist. Players must determine which of the four souls inhabiting the heroine is the "real" one. "All four personas claims that the physical form is rightfully them," notes a creator. "Throughout the game, you need to figure out who is authentic."

Once players believes a persona is an impostor, they are forced to destroy it. However, since each soul can deceive or obfuscate the reality, it is very easy to make a mistake.

"Perhaps you've already destroyed the true [soul] with your own hands," the narration suggests. "The last one standing could be a fake. Either way, your choices are final."

UN:Me does not yet have a publicly announced release date, but it is can be wishlist on digital storefronts.
